Buy a compact network microcomputer NanoPi R2S for your office or home

Chinese company FriendlyELEC (also known as FriendlyARM) is a leading manufacturer of single board computers (SBCs) and system modules (SoMs) under the NanoPi and NanoPC brands. FriendlyELEC products cover a wide range of tasks: from compact IoT gateways (NanoPi NEO) to powerful AI platforms (NanoPC‑T6 Plus with NPU 6 TOPS). A special place in the line is occupied by network routers: the popular NanoPi R2S, the more productive R4S and the industrial R5S with M.2 NVMe support.

In addition, the brand offers accessories (cases, radiators, displays, cameras, expansion boards). All devices run FriendlyWrt (OpenWrt), Ubuntu, Debian, Android and other OS.

  • Quad-core Rockchip RK3328 processor (Cortex‑A53, 1.3 GHz).
  • Two independent Gigabit Ethernet ports for routing.
  • Compact board size 55.6x52 mm and metal case.
  • Passive cooling and power consumption of only 2-3 W.
  • Support for OpenWrt (FriendlyWrt), Ubuntu Core and other OS.

How the NanoPi R2S microcomputer works

You write the FriendlyWrt image to a microSD card. Insert the card into the slot and supply 5V power via USB-C. The board boots up and becomes a full-fledged router. One Ethernet port connects to your ISP. The second port goes to your computer or Wi‑Fi router. The device processes traffic, filters packets and protects the network.

Technical characteristics and functionality

SoC Rockchip RK3328 contains 4 Cortex‑A53 cores with a frequency of up to 1.3 GHz. The amount of DDR4 RAM is 1 GB. There is no built-in eMMC, only a microSD card slot. The first Ethernet port is implemented on the RK3328 chip. The second Ethernet port is connected via USB 3.0. One USB 2.0 Type‑A port for peripherals. The USB‑C connector is used for 5V/2A power only. The UART debugging interface is available on a 3-pin header.

Three LEDs indicate power and network status. The custom button is configured through scripts. The board size is 55.6x52 mm, weight is only 30 grams. Operating temperature from 0 to 80°C. Supported OS: FriendlyWrt (OpenWrt), Ubuntu Core 20.04, DietPi, Armbian.
