How the NanoPi M5 single board computer works

This is a full-fledged computer the size of a credit card. You install the operating system on a microSD, NVMe SSD or UFS module. Connect power via USB Type-C (Power Delivery). The board loads the OS and is ready for use. The processor processes the data, the NPU accelerates the AI algorithms. You can use it as a compact PC, home server, router or smart home base.

Technical characteristics and functionality

The NanoPi M5 model is built on the basis of the powerful SoC Rockchip RK3576. The processor has 8 cores: 4x Cortex-A72 with a frequency of up to 2.2 GHz and 4x Cortex-A53 with a frequency of up to 2.0 GHz. Mali-G52 MC3 graphics accelerator supports OpenGL ES 3.2 and Vulkan 1.2. NPU provides 6 trillion operations per second performance for neural networks (INT8).

Video processor decodes 8K video at 30 frames per second. RAM available from 4 GB LPDDR4X to 16 GB LPDDR5.

The board is equipped with two Gigabit Ethernet ports and an M.2 E-Key slot for installing a Wi-Fi module. Two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports provide fast data transfer. microSD slot supports UHS-I memory cards. M.2 M-Key connector with PCIe 2.1 x1 interface allows you to connect a high-speed NVMe SSD of 2280 format.

The board also supports UFS 2.0 drives. On board there are two 4-channel MIPI-CSI inputs for cameras and a 4-channel MIPI-DSI output for display. 30-pin GPIO connector with 2.54 mm pitch gives access to I2C, UART, SPI, PWM interfaces.

NanoPi M5 is powered via USB-C with Power Delivery protocol support (6-20V input). The board size is only 90x62x1.6 mm. Operating temperature – from 0 to 70°C. The model supports a wide range of operating systems: Android 14, Debian, Ubuntu, FriendlyWrt, Buildroot, OpenMediaVault and others.
