The American company InvenSense, founded in 2003, is a leader in the field of MotionTracking solutions. In 2017, it became part of the TDK corporation. InvenSense makes motion sensors for smartphones, wearables and drones. The range includes 6-axis (ICM-20689) and 9-axis (ICM-20948) chips. Microphones and ultrasonic sensors are also produced.

How does a 9-axis motion sensor work?
The chip continuously reads angular velocity (gyroscope), linear acceleration (accelerometer) and magnetic field direction (compass). All three 16-bit ADCs convert analog signals to digital data. The built-in DMP processor performs data fusion (sensory fusion) on the sensor itself. The controller receives ready-made quaternions or Euler angles via the I2C or SPI bus. This greatly simplifies the drone stabilization code.
Technical characteristics and functionality
The MPU-9250 chip actually combines the 6-axis MPU-6500 (gyroscope + accelerometer) and magnetometer. The module is powered from 3 to 5 V. The logic part voltage can be reduced to save energy.
Built-in 16-bit ADCs measure each axis. Gyro ranges are switchable between ±250, ±500, ±1000 and ±2000°/s. Accelerometer ranges: ±2, ±4, ±8 and ±16 g. The magnetometer measures fields up to ±4800 µT. The IIC (up to 400 kHz) and SPI (up to 20 MHz data reading) protocols are supported.
The module is supplied on a board with gold-plated contacts and a pin pitch of 2.54 mm. A built-in 512-byte FIFO buffer helps accumulate data. DMP can detect gestures and count steps, offloading the main microcontroller.
